Watching the Garden Grow

Everyday sees new plants emerging and unfolding in the garden. The hostas are visibly larger each morning, surprising me with varieties I forgot I had planted last year. Columbine is about to bloom, and the late – to -leaf smokebush (Cotinus coggygria) has a few leaves unfurling. I am still waiting for the hibiscus I bought last year to show signs of life, but know that it is a very late to appear.

My 4 year old Tricyrtis formasana (toad lily) may have been a casualty. Although it is another plant that raises its head late, I think there should be some signs of life – especially in year when the lilacs are already blooming, about two weeks ahead of schedule.
