Spring Flowers

The forsythia is blooming, along with the squill and early daffodils. It’s time to finish any yard and garden cleanup, and think about preventing weeds. Corn Gluten (available at Agway, in Littleton) is a natural pre-emergent herbicide that has the added benefit of fertilizing the soil. Apply corn gluten to lawns and new garden beds now to prevent weed seeds from germinating. It needs to be wetted to become effective, so it’s best to apply on a dry day when it’s expected to rain the next day.

Corn gluten prevents growth in emerging seedlings, so do not sow any seeds of desired plants for at least six weeks after applying corn gluten.
